For Barack Obama, it’s change you can make in Photoshop.

In case you missed it, the McCain campaign is jumping on a recent Obama speech, in which Obama states,

“So nobody really thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face, so what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. … You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky. That’s essentially the argument they’re making.”

If you were to read the mainstream media’s coverage, such as this July 31 Washington Post article, you’d find claims such as:

Raising a politically-explosive issue for the first time this election, Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) campaign accused Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) this morning of invoking the specter of race in order to bolster his electoral prospects.

…of course, the accusation is factually inaccurate, at best, and racist smear at the worst. Watching the McCain ad from June, you’ll see the McCain camp put Obama’s face on a 100-dollar bill. It is clear, then, that McCain has “played the race card” by accusing Obama of the same… Unambiguously.

It’s critically important to be accurate on this point: McCain has fired the first racist volley in this battle… Read the Post article closely, because even there it is clear that McCain is the first one to raise this “politically explosive issue.”
