Viewfinder: How to Seamlessly “Flickrize” Google Earth

2008/04/09/1610

RTFA: http://interactive.usc.edu/viewfinder/

“Viewfinder” is a novel method for users to spatially situate, or “find the pose,” of their photographs, and then to view these photographs, along with others, as perfectly aligned overlays in a 3D world model such as Google Earth. Our objective is to provide a straightforward procedure for geo-locating photos of any kind, and our approach is to engage a community of users for a certain amount of human help. We specify that a 10-year-old should be able to find the pose of a photo in less than a minute, and we are convinced that this goal is achievable. While we are not entirely there yet, we are getting closer. This is our progress report.

I-R.A.S.C is an infra-red device working as a protection shield from infra-red surveillance cameras. Everibody can rebuild this device without special technical skills.

Interesting. In the same way that movie theaters have been using IR lights to foil camcorder-toting would-be pirates, you too can use an IR light to foil the surveillance state. Those ubiquitous cameras that are recording your every movement also largely happen to be sensitive to IR. If you can groove on the Laughing Man in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, then this is right up your alley.

You’ve seen these tech logos everywhere, but have you ever wondered how they came to be? Did you know that Apple’s original logo was Isaac Newton under an apple tree? Or that Nokia’s original logo was a fish?
Let’s take a look at the origin of tech companies’ logos and how they evolved over time

…an excellent waste of time.

Pennsylvania Avenue Project Photos

Existing condition view from the south sidewalk looking north towards Riggs Bank at 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

This is a neat sequence of photos, taken by a person who is standing half-way between the old Riggs Bank and the White House. The photos are a record of the construction that was taking place on the sidewalk between the two buildings.

The Only Mario Level That Plays Itself video

After entering the level, leaving the controller untouched seems to reveal an easter egg from Nintendo!

Really neat SNES video (Japanese, looks like) of a (possibly hidden) Mario level.
